London Calling! Family Fun Wins the Gold at Zoo Olympics

Summer sports season is heating up across the pond but Edmontonians have their own chance to go for the gold. Join us for the Edmonton Valley Zoo Summer Animal Olympics to see if you have what it takes! Get your Animal Olympic passport stamped at each station to win a prize and visit the athlete’s village craft station to make an awesome take-home Olympic medal craft. You’ll also have a chance to say hello to some furry friends at the Top of the Podium Petting Zoo. Take a break and enjoy the Olympic flame airbrushed tattoos or enter to win some London 2012 prizes. Join the interpretive staff to play some games or help make an amazing animal enrichment treat for some of our Canadian animal friends. Next, watch some of the Edmonton Valley Zoo Staff compete in the Edmonton Valley Staff Olympics and help cheer on your favourite athlete! There will also be a variety of animal encounters and a number of surprises to help keep you in the Olympic spirit. You’ll also have a chance to meet an Olympian! Drop Off the Kids for Drop-in Ball Hockey

He shoots, he scores! Ball hockey fun awaits your pre-teens all summer long for drop-in programming at Crestwood arena. Date:   Saturdays until August 25, 2012 Time: Ages 9–13 drop-in, 1-2pm Ages 14–17 drop-in, 2:30-3:30pm Location:   Crestwood Arena, 9940-147 Street Cost:   $6, goalies play for free, or a valid monthly or annual admission pass This is a great opportunity for Edmonton teens to work on their hockey skills while meeting new friends. Full equipment is required , including hockey helmet with full facial protection, hockey gloves, running shoes, shin guards and hockey sticks.  

 
 

Mill Woods Recreation Centre Pool Opens Saturday July 28, 2012

The aquatic facility at the Mill Woods Recreation Centre will reopen Saturday July 28, 2012 at 6am after being closed due to flooding from the July 12, 2012 storm. All pool amenities will be available except the waves and whirlpool. Residents will once again be able to enjoy the 45 metre swimming pool, dive tank and teach pool. The whirl pool is expected to be back in operation the week of July 30, 2012. The wave machine will be replaced during a planned facility shutdown scheduled to start August 27, 2012. Regular maintenance and repair helps ensure the sustainability of City facilities for our current and future patrons.

 
 

Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre Closes for Maintenance

On July 2, 2012 , Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre will close for regularly scheduled maintenance. The facility is scheduled to reopen on October 1, 2012. The City of Edmonton is committed to providing our recreational users with quality facilities. Regular maintenance ensures our facilities are safe, secure and clean for our patrons to fully enjoy. Please feel free to continue your fitness and recreation activities at a neighbouring City of Edmonton recreation centre. Privileges are dependent on pass type and annual passes will automatically be upgraded to the next highest level. Calling all Shutterbugs – Snap It, Send It and Win

Muttart Conservatory’s Shutterbug Photo Contest Are you a budding photographer looking for the right exposure? Well here is your chance to win with the Muttart Conservatory’s Shutterbug Photo Contest ! Send us your best original, unedited photos taken either inside the Muttart , or outside showing the iconic pyramids in Edmonton’s landscape. It could be a favourite of yours from last winter, the spring blooms in the Temperate Pyramid, or something you’ve discovered for the very first time. The winning photos will be selected by a panel of industry experts and will be featured in the 2013 Muttart Calendar. Mill Woods Recreation Centre Reopens Fitness Centre

The Mill Woods Recreation Centre fitness centre will open to the public on Monday July 23, 2012 at 5am. The arena and seniors activities centre are fully operational but the pool will continue to remain closed until further notice. The City closed the entire facility after the basement flooded with approximately 5 feet of water during a severe storm on July 12, 2012. Repair crews are working diligently to repair damage to electrical and plumbing equipment located in the mechanical room in the basement. These systems play an important role in ensuring the water quality of the swimming pool. The City is working to get the pool reopened as quickly as possible.  Information about facility openings and closures is available online . Big Rigs to Roll Through Edmonton

On Wednesday July 18, starting at 11:15am, the IndyCar® Transporter Convoy will travel from the race track at the City Centre Airport to the downtown area and back again. It will take about 10 minutes for the entire Transporter Convoy procession to pass by. Rolling road closures will take place during this time. Visit route map for details . Seeing these big rigs make their way through downtown is quite impressive. Check out a video from the 2011 Transporter Convoy , and then line the route to see the rigs in person. The Transporter trucks are the rigs that get the race cars to each race track. They also double as garages and are filled with extra car parts, tools and the equipment needed to adjust or repair the cars through the weekend. Please Use Caution on Park Trails

Recent weather has affected several trails in Edmonton’s river valley prompting closures or cautions. Please be careful on park trails and avoid unsafe areas. Park rangers are currently assessing the river valley trail system. Updates about current trail conditions can be found at edmonton.ca/trailcautions . Please be aware of affected areas before heading out to enjoy the river valley.

For those who like to get an early game in, Rundle Park golf course offers an Early Birdie discount rate of $10 for 9 holes and $15 for 18 holes on weekdays from 6-8am. Take advantage of Edmonton’s long evening with Twilight golf at Riverside and Victoria Golf Courses , Enjoy discounted rates of $25 from Monday to Thursday and $30 Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Holidays. New this year is the Golf Discount Card which offers 10% off green fees at any municipal course throughout the 2012 season.
